Brasov. Saxon Experience 8
Gain a deeper understanding of the peasant fortifications in the region by walking the tiered citadel of Rupea that started out in the 10th century as a small fort on a defensible hill, and then kept on expanding in order to keep up with the growing threats. After years of restoration its walls are dominating this valley once more to the delight of the occasional photographer.
Then head to the Saxon village of Viscri, that in the 90’s was slowly becoming a ghost town due to the massive migration of the ethnic Germans. Its fate was changed by the personal involvement of the Prince of Wales who raised awareness about the danger of losing skills, crafts and architectural treasures that had developed over centuries. Have lunch while soaking in the village on one of the properties: the homegrown produce, cooked following centuries-old recipes, will reveal what true Saxon food should taste like. Then keep on enjoying this living museum, climb the lard tower and step into the traditional forge. Return to Brasov where you will have the evening at leisure.
